Cork is a sustainable, easy to produce and fire-retardant material so it makes good sense that Portuguese startup Ecocubo has designed a tiny house using the stuff. The non-towable dwelling is very basic but would be a good fit for a cabin or vacation home and includes all the basics required to live.
The Ecocubo is raised atop stilts and measures just 9 sq m (96 sq ft), plus a small wooden deck area. We love the look of the cork and how it fits together like the classic video game Tetris.
Inside, the decor is very simple and the home includes a living area with sofa bed, kitchenette, cupboards and drawers, and lots of other storage space.
The bathroom includes a composting toilet and shower.
The Ecocubo can either run off-the-grid using solar or wind power, or can be plugged into the grid. Because of the cork’s insulating qualities, air-conditioning is not required for keeping cool, nor should much heating be needed either, except in the coldest climates.
This one has a very reasonable price tag of only $11,700 – $17,550, depending on options. Find out more at Ecocubo
