Designers never seem to run out of good ideas for old shipping containers and the Cargo by Madeiguincho is a much more livable example of this than most.
Cargo is based on a standard shipping container and measures 6 x 2.5 m (roughly 20 x 8 ft). Madeiguincho heavily modified the metal box, adding a rooftop terrace and a space-saving interior that opens up to the outside via an operable wall section.

The metal exterior has been finished in wood and its rooftop terrace sports a large overhang, which, along with insulation and operable windows, should help maintain a comfortable temperature inside. A ladder provides access to a roof and one exterior wall opens up when the weather suits. There’s also a deck and large double glass doors that are shaded by wooden slats.

The interior proper features warm wooden finishes and is centered around a large room with a raised bed and some storage underneath, as well as an L-shaped seating area. A porthole-style window enlivens the place too.

The Cargo has a small and simple kitchen, while elsewhere is a small bathroom which hosts a shower and a toilet.

The Cargo is located in Lagos, in Portugal’s Algarve region, and is used as a short-term rental and vacation home.
